Veterinary instruments

Veterinarians are the doctor specializing in the health of animals. They do the necessary surgical operations and care for the well-being of the animal creatures. The very basic thing they need in a certain operation and care is the veterinary instruments. This will serve as the main allay of every veterinarian in providing care. Here are the lists of the basic instruments being used by veterinarians.

  1. 1. Bull Nose

The bull nose is one of the main instruments needed in rendering care for animals particularly the bull and the calf. It is an instrument being placed in the nasal septum of different domestic animals like cattle, but ideally use for bulls. The bull nose is a special type of ring placed in the nose of the bull. This is used for handling the cattle, as well as controlling the cattle from showing. Bull nose is also in preventing the pig from rooting, encouraging the calves on weaning their young, and also use for discouraging other forms of livestock from suckling. Basically, for calf wearing a bull ring, it is a perfect method of weaning them. The plastic spikes are very uncomfortable for the cows. This will cause them to reject suckling. Plastic bull nose are reusable as they do not leave any incision on the animals. They are just creating pressure. Bull tong, or bull nose, also called as bull pliers are useful tool when being drenched on the cattle. There are various specifications being used in the handling of bull nose. These are the harms bull nose, bull nose holder, bull holder with coiled, the plain bull holder, steel bull nose, bull nose, stainless steel bull nose, nose twitch, stainless steel bull holder, cow straps, as well as the bull ring. The bull nose ring is a very useful tool in putting restrain on the nose and mouth of the bull. Bull nose ring is made of different materials like stainless steel, plastic, and many others. The price of the bull nose as well as the bull nose ring greatly varies depending on the type of material being used. The plastic types are the reusable. They are also cheaper compared to stainless steel. However, the stainless steel bull nose is durable and long lasting.

  1. 2. Castration forceps

Castration forceps is also referred as castration pliers. It is intended for cow and bull animals. This is a stainless steel use primarily for animals that have minimal blood loss due to crushed blood vessels. This is usually happening after an animal has a cut. The main importance of this veterinary instruments is to reduce the trauma to the animal brought about by blood loss. The castration forceps belong to the surgical veterinary instruments . The castration forceps comes in different sizes and styles. The forceps that you will use greatly depend on the type of animals, as well as the size of the animal being castrated. The basic type of castrating forceps is the Burdizzo castration forceps. It is use for castrating animals. The sizes vary from 47 cm, 40 cm, 36 cm, 30 cm, and 23 cm. there is also castration forceps with knee piece. The handle of castrating forceps is made with different materials. There are metals and wooden handles. The castration forceps is mainly use for limiting the blood loss of an animal during the process of castration. The Burdizzo castrating forceps of 14 inches size is being used for the castration of calves, bulls, pigs, rams, and colts. It is being used for humane as well as for livestock’s bloodless castration. The Haussmann is another type of castrator forceps. Why is there a need for a castrating forceps? The use of castration forceps is important in the process of castration. It is usually performed in a male animal particularly houses and bulls. It is a process of removing or destructing the testicles of male animals. It is mainly done in order to stop the production of the male hormones of the animal. They are also stop from having semen. It is also use for preventing the reproductive hormone of the animal to function, meaning the mating process is prevented.

  1. 3. Dehorning instruments

Dehorning is the process of removing horns from cattle. This is often performed in cattle, sheep and goats for economic and safety purposes. Cattle can have horns with different length, size and shape and are considered detrimental to cattle from a production and welfare perspective, and posing a potential safety risk to handlers. Tipping or removal of the insensitive sharp end of the horn is different from dehorning and does little to reduce the disadvantages of dehorning, such as bruising. It is better to dehorn the cattle at a younger age because they suffer less pain and stress and have a lower risk of infection. The younger cattle are also easier to handle and restrain. This is normally done by a veterinarian or a trained professional and performed commonly during the spring and autumn, when flies are not abundant.

There are several dehorning instruments available in the market. There’s the Barnes Style Dehorner, available in small and large sizes and steel and hardwood handles, respectively. Another is the Bell Dehorner, made of solid copper set with a 20 inch steel handle. This is available in 5/8”, ¾”and 7/8”sizes. A Convex Dehorner is a strong and simple too for large horns as one knife does the enitr cutting job. A smaller version of this, the Convex Jr is smaller and lighter than the regular convex, and is ideal for calves up to 1 year. A Dual Dehorner can also be employed for older calves 2 -12 weeks old using the large 1”size and a small ¾”for baby calves 3-10 days old. It is made of solid brass with heavy duty heating element that stays hot enough to do both horns. Another electric dehorner can remove the horns of the young calf without blood loss and only a short period of time is need for the dehorning process.

A guillotine dehorner is made entirely of metal, with a Grade A 4130 steel blade and handles for a comfortable grip, so that your knuckles won’t bump when used. Maintain this piece of equipment by keeping it lightly oiled. Another innovation is the Horn Stop Instant Dehorner, where the cutting tip is heated up to 1400 degrees and cuts the horns without blood. To get the best results, use this on calves under two weeks. A Keystone Dehorner is considered the standard for dehorning larger animals, where a gear driven blade works against a fixed blade for a double cutting action. It is set in wooden handles and extra blades are available as replacement. There is also the Knuckle Saver Barnes Dehorner, which is designed to be used in close quarters such as around headlocks, squeeze chutes and holding pens. It has 18 degree offset tubular steel handles perfect for close cutting in less space. The professional Barnes Style dehorner is also available, individually handmade with Grade A 4130 steel blades and its outer blade is bent inward to improve angle and give a cleaner cut. It is best to keep it lightly oiled to maintain integrity.

  1. 4. Castrators

Castration is commonly practiced in domestic livestock not intended for breeding. They are usually castrated to avoid uncontrolled or unwanted reproduction and to reduce or prevent territorial aggression and other signs of territorial aggression. Sometimes, male horses are castrated using emasculators, because they are quite aggressive and troublesome. The same can be said to mules, although they are considered sterile. Some male cattle are castrated to improve fattening and make them docile. Livestock may also be considered for castration when used for food to augment the growth or weight of individual males, and to reduce the undesirable taste and odor of the meat from sexually mature males. To reduce boar taint, male pigs are usually either castrated shortly after birth or slaughtered before they even reach sexual maturity.

There are methods to perform veterinary castration. This includes instant surgical removal, the use of an elastrator that secures a band around the testicles to disrupt its blood supply. Another is through using a Burdizzo tool or emasculators to crush the spermatic cords, thereby disrupting blood supply. Others use pharmacological injections and implants and other immunological techniques to inoculate the animal against its own sex hormones. For bloodless castration, a California Bander is used with ease and promises to be bloodless. This is used by inserting a T-clip that is placed to each band into the slot end, then stretches it around the scrotal sac and lock the band onto the clip. This dries up the sac for about 7 to 10 days and it is advised to vaccinate the livestock with tetatnus toxoid afterwards. There are also emasculators which prevent primary and secondary hemorrhage. This is called a double crush emasculator and the reason for this is that it has a multiple crushing action on the spermatic cord and artery, making it bloodless.

  1. 5. Ear instrument

Ear infections are one of the most common and unfortunately, painful problems of animals. These problems are usually caused by bacteria, yeast, fungus, ticks, foxtails and more. It is but proper to diagnose and treat these infections immediately. However, due to the variety and number of pathogens that causes infection, diagnosis and treatment are also awfully variable. However, we can safely say that once a n animal has an ear infection, it is very likely that it will return again in the future for many animals have allergies or hereditary tendencies which cannot be cured from the chronic ear disease.

Another common practice regarding animal ears is cropping. Common breeds such as Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane, Miniature Pinscher and Boxer Schnauzer and Pitt Bull have been routinely subjected to ear cropping because erect ears are less likely to develop infections, which may be due to an improvement in the air circulation. This is also done for cosmetic reasons. The ideal age for an ear crop surgery is between 10 to 12 weeks; it is considered to be a major surgery that takes over an hour to complete. The animal is placed under general anesthesia so no pain will be felt by the pet.

Several ear products are available in the market. There is an organic ear mite killer and Zymox ear cleanser. Quadraclear ear drops are also used to clear infections. Ear notchers are also available made of strong and lightweight aluminum. This creates a good and clean v notch at the pig’s ear. A similar ear notcher is also available for calves, where the aluminum is carefully grounded after being hardened and tempered. Ear tags with corresponding numbers and different colors are also available for cattle, horses and swine; this is used to facilitate identification and grouping of the livestock.

Hoof knives are also used to eliminate dried out sole that are already not intact or those are already loose. In this manner, it should be that only dry and loose sole are to be trimmed by this instrument or else the specimen will experience bleeding. The blade of this knife in located at the lower area of its handle which is the reason why the sole trimming is done perfectly. There are hoof knives that are left, right or double edged depending on where it will be used. The prices also vary from 9 to 20 dollars per piece. However, there are set of this knives that ca be bought in a much lower price than buying them per piece.
